Hello wolf people – this is my third video now for a short series I’m doing documenting my hybrid cub’s growth and I’m also answering question regarding training, animal psychology, etc.

My cub “Gambit” is now 22 weeks old and is already almos the size of our larger German Shepard who is actually the largest German Shepard I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot! He’s a big, beautiful, and healthy dog.

Wolf-dogs are a different breed and that must be kept in mind. I urge you to take the time to research the animal before even considering owning one. There’s a great book that I read called “Wolfdogs A – Z!” and it’s a perfect place to start. Remember that they’re not entirely like your other dogs while at the same time they’re by no means the little monsters a lot of people have made them out to be.

Wolfdogs train VERY well, they can be house-broken, heel, leash trained, etc. They’re one of the most intelligent of all the canines – normally operating in a hierarchy with other animals and even your house hold. But don’t worry, you’re always gonna be the alpha and you’re always gonna be the center of their world.Personally, I prefer them over dogs.

Remember to give your animals their parvo shots and heartworm medication!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are many ways to teach this behavior. Another being, holding out your hand and asking the dog to “Shake” and then whipping your hand away so that the dogs foot lands on top of the other foot. There is also another way, where the trainer can lure the dog to the left or right when they are in the down position and the dog will naturally cross their paws to reach the treat, which you can use your clicker to capture.

Let me know if you do succeed in getting your dog to cross their paws! Some dogs are easier than others! Kiko with her match stick legs (who NEVER crosses her paws hardly ever) was a challenge!

Also pay attention to the way your dogs hips are laying. If they lay with their hips to one side, then it might be easier for them to cross their paws in one direction better than the other. If they are lying like a lion then they will be able to cross both ways with the same ease.

I didnt use a clicker during this exercise as is quite hard to hold the clicker and it clicks right under the dog which can make them confused. If possible you can get a friend to help mark the behavior.

p.s. I did some sloppy training in this video! I give multiple cues such as ‘jump’ ‘hup’ and ‘jump through’ ! and am sloppy with the reward. Which makes me have to say, if you are really into training, make sure to film yourself to assess what you think you are doing to what you are actually doing!

Note: For Splash the word ‘yes’ is a conditioned reinforcer like some people use ‘good girl’ so you will see me say ‘yes’ and not give a treat afterwards. For Splash and Kiko the click means a treat always follows. Any other word means they might get one, they might not.

Using clicker training and reward training you never need to punish or nag your dog. And you will have a dog that not only WANTS to do what you want them to do, but does it without you even asking!
