When I go to the step and get a new family member and start to training my dog, it comes with a lot of new responcibillity, but even more joy. This new family member requires a lot of attention and love from it’s new parents. However it is very important to undersatnd that this is not a human being, but an animal with a very different instincts and urges from what we are used to with humans. To treat your dog as a human being is the classic misstake a lot of new dog owner makes, and it gives them a great deal of challanges in the years to come. I am going to give you a few tips from how I am training my dog, and hopefully you can benefit from it as well.
If you are planing to get your selves a dog you should consider a few elements. The most relevant question you need to ask your selves is: How active dog to you like to have, and what qualities do you wont your dog to have. I have helped people that got a dog that where so cute as a puppy (and they all are), but when it grew up it literally required to much for them. It was to much to handle, and this could be prevented if you do some research before you bye your first dog. It need to fit in to your daily life routine.
All dogs need exercise in some form (a lot of ways to do that). They need a lot of love and affection, especially in the first 6-12 months. Personally I like dogs that loves to ”work”, and by work I mean dogs that from the nature have strong urges to hunting and fight. These dogs are not agressive by no means, but they just have strong urges that are very helpful when you are looking for spessific abbilities in a dog. My dog (Tara a black german shepherd on the picture) are a breed to do spessific search quality, to find landmines and other explisives in the ground, and she just loves to work. But to her it is all associated with fun because she is always rewarded with her favorite toy. My neighbor next door for instance likes a dog that are perfect for low activity, because it suits their need better and then it is important to choose a type of dog that fits their lifestyle and so should you.
When you get your first dog, there are a few small things you should implement at once: Give your dog a lot of affection and love. Secondly teach your dog to understand the word NO from day one. When I am training my dog and others it’s ALWAYS easier to work with a dog that knows the word no. Period. It will also make it a lot easier for you to start to work on more advanced training. Finally always train your dog with reward, every time your do completes a command you are working on, reward it immediately. Let the dog know WHY he is rewarded. Reward, reward, reward!
Next time I will go one step further and give you a bit more insight in how I am training my dog (my dog below).
All the best for you and your dog(s)
Tom
