If you are one of the million of dog owner that wonder how to train dog jumping up on everyone, you are not alone although that’s not to any help to you.  The number one rule on to stop jumping is this.  The number one mistake we do is to give the dog some sort of attention when he jumps, and to the dog that’s often interpret as a reward.  Ignore this behavior always.  A jumping dog can be funny when it is a puppy, but not so cool when it is 100 lbs beast.

If your dog knows the command sit, start to use it every time he is jumping, and reward him when he sits down.  When your dog jumps up next time use the sit down command and reward him big time when he does.  Reward is very important because a dog will repeat the behavior it is rewarded for.  My job is to make it clear to the dog when he is rewarded and when he is not. When your repeat this a number of times your dog will see that when he sits down he gets rewarded, but nothing for jumping.

An other good trick to use is that when your dog comes against you and you expect him to jump, raise your right arm to your shoulder.  This will attract focus to your arm, and the best way for the dog to see in that angel is to sit down .  What do you do then? Praise him again.

It is important for a quick success here, so every member of your family need to to the same thing to the dog to avoid confusion.

If your dog should after this every once in a while repeat this behavior, just ignore it completely, and he will stop sooner than you hope for.
