This is going to be a 4 part series. There are 4 parts to teaching a stay and they should all be taught separately.

In this video and the next 3 videos you will see that you can teach a dog to stay without using force, without yelling, without using the word “No” or making horrible noises. All you need to do is click and reward the good behavior (the behavior that you like).

Part one to teaching a dog to stay: DURATION.

What is duration – Well, it is the length of time that the dog will stay in one spot without moving. The length will depend on your needs. If you do competition obedience, you will need your dog to be able to stay for one minute without moving (as well as with distance & distractions, which will be the focus of my other videos). If you just want your dog to sit for a few seconds then build up your dogs duration to the amount of time you wish.

You also do not have to use the word “Stay”. I use the word “Stay” if I want my dog to stay for a longer period of time (say 1 minute), but I use “Wait” if he will only have to be there a short time. It is completely up to you. You can use the same word to mean both. Again, it is your choice. Just STAY CONSISTENT!

When building up the duration at which your dog stays in one place:
1. Make sure you STAY close to your dog when working on duration!!! (we always work on one piece of the puzzle at a time, it is just too hard to put together a puzzle if you have 4 pieces in your hand at once. So, think of teaching your dog to stay as if you are putting together a puzzle. It also takes time to put together a puzzle and it takes time to get a SOLID stay with a dog!)
2. Do this slowly (1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds)
3. Do not assume that your dog knows how to stay for 1 minute if the longest he has stayed is 10 seconds.
4. Do not move too quickly.
5. Make sure your dog knows that it is his choice. He can move, but what good is that. He will not get what he wants which is that piece of chicken.
6. Do not get frustrated if your dog does move. Remember he is not a ROBOT! He is a living thinking being and has choices. If he makes a choice that you do not like, you have a choice too, and that would be to NOT reward his bad decision. NO big deal. Life goes on! We all make mistakes from time to time. I am sure that none of you are perfect, so WHY do we expect our dogs to be perfect???

You can also practice the same method with a sit, down, or stand.

My next 2 videos will show you how to add:
Distance – Moving far away from the dog as he stays in one place.
Distractions – Adding distractions

My last video of the series will show the many different ways to proof the stay and make sure your dog can stay no matter what is around. Well with in reason! I would NEVER expect my dog to STAY if I or he thought that the environment was dangerous, or if it caused him stress. For example, I would not ask him to stay in an environment that the distractions are unpredictable and could cause him harm, stress, or perhaps get him attacked by another dog. Use common sense and set your dog up for success. Remember that your dog needs to know he can trust you.

If you still have questions after all that, please feel free to contact me! Have a great Christmas and Keep your eye out for the rest of the videos in this series!

Happy Clicking!
