In no way do I condone pestering a dog in order to make them offer calming signals for you to see. I kissed Kiko on the head in this video to show you something that dogs HATE that is often done to them, not that I want to condone it! ☺
Dogs bite. You should never put your face in a dogs face. Calming signals can be offered when you are standing or sitting, I was very close to Splash at one point in this video because it was hard to fit us in the video screen, and Splash is very comfortable with me being that close to her face. Never lean into a dogs face in order to communicate with them! Its Threatening!
This video is about the secret language of dogs. Some of you might already know about Calming Signals, but the main population that find out about dog training through Television programs might not.
In this video I will show you how you can use your dogs own language to communicate with them. I will also show you how to interpret your dogs language.
Turid Rugaas is an internationally renowned dog trainer who has studied and researched calming signals for over a decade! You can visit her site on calming signals to learn more AND PICK UP ONE OF HER BOOKS AND DVDS on the subject.

I also have to say that Turid Rugaas has the best leash walking book out there. My dog pulls-What do I do?
I am eternally grateful to Turid for giving me the ability to be able to talk with my dogs in their own language.
Here are the main calming signals that I like to use with dogs-
1 Soft Eye Blinks
2 Looking Away
3 Lip Licks
4 Yawning
1- you can use calming signals to calm a dog down and tell them “no worries”
2- You can monitor your dog’s calming signals and if they are doing more than normal you can tell your dog is getting more stressed (calming signals are normal and happen all the time)
3- If you pet your dog and they offer CS that is normal, but Imagine this Scenario- a child pets a dog and it offers lots of CS. Then the dog walks away from the child, and the parent brings the child to the dog again, and the dog offers even more CS and walks away to lie down, then the parent brings the child to pet the dog a third time, and finally the dog is so stressed that it growls, or bites. The parent could have read that the dog did not want to be petted by the child more than that first time if they knew about CS.

that’s retarded… dogs blink, yawn, look away and lick there licks all the time… it doesn’t mean they are communicating…every animal does those things! Typical american retarded theory that a 3 year old could tell is not plausible.

You are lovely, thank you for sharing your passion!
@yachtsoma I do …
@yachtsoma I do also do play bows, and dogs respond with other playbows. I think sometimes dogs can read humans “speaking dog” but then the can also understand some aspects of humans being humans- like pointing, gesturing and where our eyes are focused. Dogs blow my mind!!!!
@yachtsoma When you …
@yachtsoma When you say DRI do you mean Differential Reinforcement of an Incompatible behavior?
@MWcrazyhorse …
I think that most dog training so called “theories” are actually “hypotheses” so I guess that is how the word got into my vocab as meaning – something untested scientifically, haha. Thanks for alerting me to it!

@puddinpop12228 I’m quite confident Emily would want nothing to do with Cesar and his outdated training methods and use of force and so-called “corrections”. Emily teaches POSITIVE reinforcement.

The middle post got clipped, it basically said I had put back the calming signals.
Calming signals can …
Calming signals can also be thought of as effective DRI for us in the way we look at our dogs. This is the problem with animal psychology there is always more than one perspective. Ttouch definitely helps dogs relax too and I think this is pretty good DRI for us as well as a good massage technique for dogs. I must get going I have a dog class to observe in 30 minutes I can rabbit on about dogs all day if I am not stopped.
Well I say unique …
Well I say unique but what I actually mean is that in dogs we find it has evolved to higher levels than cats, rabbits and other mammals. I find the dog human behavioural dynamic absolutely fascinating. I have been using calming signals with all my dogs since I was about 4 years old (it wasn’t called calming signals then it was just called me acting like a dog). I stopped this year when I met an animal behaviourist that pointed out that dogs look at us differently to each other.
I am currently …
I am currently researching dog human behaviour, mirror neurons is a very recent discovery. I like your theory but not having access to an MRI scanner to put both a human and dog into to test it. What is certainly true is that humans and other animals definitely mirror each other when in close relationships. Dogs also have very high emotional intelligence when it comes to reading us, this is a unique ability in the animal kingdom.
Very interesting! …
Very interesting! Thank you for posting this video. I recently adopted a 7 year old female, white german shepherd who has some fear issues when being directly approached by people or dogs. I hoping to help her get over her anxieties by being able to somehow communicate to her that these situations are not all bad. I knew to watch out for these behaviors, but is is so helpful to actually be able to see them in action such as your video portrays. Thank you again for posting this!!
