The technique used for crate training dogs helps them understand where to go to get relief for urination and defecation. Taking on the task of training a puppy will take patience and persistence but long-term it is very effective.  Keep in mind that crate training dogs takes a little longer than other types of training.  Dogs come to love going to their crate because it becomes their secure location, they will feel safe in this enclosure.  Training this way can become an important component of training your puppy.  Always take your puppy or dog out to relieve themselves before crating.  It is equally important to get your puppy to enter the crate so use something that will encourage them to go in such as a toy or treat.

When crate training dogs find the right size for your dog.  Don’t make the crate too large for the dog. It should be just large enough for the dog to turn around and to have a small blanket and maybe a toy.  If it is to large the dog will feel free to relieve himself in the crate and you don’t want that.  If by putting the puppy in the crate the that comes difficult and fussy then give him a few minutes to settle down and then take him out. Giver him lots of praise when you get good behavior. If you take him out soon it only teaches him if he fusses more he will get out sooner.

It is a good idea to give the dog plenty of exercise if he has been crated for a long period.  Always praise your puppy or dog for good behavior and offer snacks and toys when you put him in his house.  Knowing that you will be gone many hours during the day will give you peace of mind that your dog will stay out of trouble while you are gone. Dog trainers will recommend crate training dogs because it tends to eliminate many behavioral problems and if done correctly will make your dog very easy to live with.

As soon as you bring your puppy home is the best time to start crate training.  Most puppies will chew on anything and not only destroy your furniture and shoes but could get into serious trouble.  If you bring your puppy home from the breeder and he has already been introduced to the crate it is important that you continue that training.  This gives you a head start on potty training for your puppy.  Also traveling crate training dogs are accepted in more places such as motels and airports.  Don’t ever punish your dog by putting it in a crate, it should be an enjoyable place for them to be.
