This video is dedicated to all the little dogs in the world who run away from their owners when their owner takes out their harness. The same method of counter conditioning can also be used for dogs that don’t like their muzzle or dogs that don’t like the leash being attached to their collars.

Love your videos! …
Love your videos! Just wondering how you know if the problem is actually an uncomfortable harness? My little dog is sensitive all over, loves being petted and rubbed but has lots of ‘ticklish’ spots. I hate the thought of ‘training’ him to wear something that really feels awful for him, and I’m wondering if I should just keep trying different harnesses until i find one he likes?
Excellent video!! …
Excellent video!! Thank you SO MUCH for posting. My Crystal is exactly like yours. She is super sweet with everyone (people) though. She loves them and doesn’t growl or show aggression signs towards them. However, she HATES her harness. She loves going for walks but when she seeing the harness, she hides, I didn’t know that it is due to her being sensitive to being touched as she loves to be pet. She just hates the harness. I’m gonna teach her this. THANKS!

Oops! My puppy started whimpering part way through and I realised he was hearing the clicks and not getting any treats! When he stopped whimpering I gave him some treats for being settled at my feet – both to teach being settled (I loved your Lying at your Feet video – ‘treats rain down…’ lol), and to assuage my guilt!.

Nice techniques Emily.
My Jack Russell LOVES her harness and will in fact hate to wear her collar comparing to her harness.
But I am going on vacation tomorrow and my Jack Russell comes with me everywhere, so going on the train, the man only lets dogs with muzzles on.
But she is defiantly not vicious, anyway, I was wondering… Does this video work for wearing a muzzle?
Keep up the good work and thanks. x

Excellent video. I also use layers of tape on the clicker I use inside. My dog was never afraid of the harness, but I always said “harness on” and “harness off” when handeling and these are commands he knows now and he will come to me to let me take it of or put it on when I say these words..

could you do some more vids about how to make your dog feel comfortable when touching him? because my dog is really sensitive too. there’s no problem with the harness, though, because we have one, where she doesn’t need to put her head through. but everytime i try to touch her head or shoulders she steps back or starts licking my hands as if she was afraid of being touched :/ of course i could feed her for letting me touch her but i don’t want her to think that everytime i do so she gets a treat
