This is a success-guaranteed method of teaching a dog the “leave it” command. By being patient and shaping the dog’s behavior step-by-step, we can teach them to ignore something that they want.
This video highlights the very beginning few steps of teaching this important cue. Further training is required to build on it and make it even more solid.
The dog that you see in this video is Charlie. He is a friend’s dog who was kind enough to let me work with him for this video. The entire session was no more than 15 minutes.

@shadyonedeath What kind of treats would you recommend for a 14 week old “Old English Sheepdog” – Can I just break up cookies or are there tiny treats you could suggest?

@shadyonedeath Only …
@shadyonedeath Only if the dog seems to be struggling with the exercise. Usually we have to do that when we increase the difficulty significantly. Once the dog knows it well, it won’t be necessary.

Should you restart the techniques from the beginning stage every new training session/day?

@teooli They make excellent family dogs given the appropriate amount of training and exercise. I have met some incredibly well mannered boxers that were a part of families with many small children.

Your videos are very good. I am planning to get a boxer.
Do you know something about this breed as a family dog?
I agree 100% with …
I agree 100% with how important this is. My dog and I have hit a snag. I want to teach him to leave food in people’s hands, not just on the floor. He is VERY driven, and I always get a nose touch before he backs off. I’ve tried a few different tricks, and still haven’t figured out how to shape him to back off on cue rather than touch-then-backoff. The touch is a big problem if it’s something dangerous, or an ice cream cone!

@murwill1 They …
@murwill1 They shouldn’t choose to get it by themselves, but it’s okay so long as it’s coming through the handler, as a reward for understanding and choosing to leave it first. We want to condition the dog to understand that if they want something they have to ask for permission from the handler without deciding by themselves to go after it. Limited by characters here – so message me for a more detailed explanation.

Excellent video …
Excellent video once again! I just love how clear you are with your explanations. My 9 week old puppy, Morgen, is picking up this command pretty well. He just needs to look at me more rather than be fixated on my hand. I guess it’s because he knows which pocket I keep the treats in and he just watches the hand/pocket.
