I have recently bought Don Sullivan’s secrets to training the perfect dog set. It seems a bit cruel when he yanks the dog for not doing as its told. Has anyone else tried it? Does it work? My dog will not do as he is told. Treat training does not work with him as he doesn’t like the treats. Any ideas? He seems to get worse as he gets older (he’s 10yrs old)
He hates men and other dogs. He was abused as a puppy and thrown out of a car. We rescued the poor little thing. Any ideas on training him? One of these days he will get run over. He gets out of the garden sometimes and bolts accross the road. He has learnt how to open the gate!

First, change the gate. Second, I don’t know what that tells you. I also don’t know at what points he tells you to yank the dog, but if it is while walking there are other ways. If he is yanking the dog to hurt it then that is cruel – if it is just slight so the dog notices and stops that’s different. I also would not use a choke chain, use a halti collar or harness.

While walking just stop and change direction when he pulls. Keep doing that until he learns he won’t get anywhere by pulling. When he walks well praise him. If there is any food he likes give him some of that sometimes as a treat.

If he hates men maybe try and teach him not all men are bad. This may take time – same with dogs, although perhaps it would be better to stay away from dogs and just teach him not to do anything if he does see one.

Yanking a traumatized dog might not be the best thing to do. He doesn’t like the treats?

Then find something he does like to play/eat!

Treats are not just those colorful and supposedly yummy stuff that you buy from a pet stor, but also anything the dog might like to eat every once in a while.

    Praising also works.

Put a padlock on your gate so your dog can’t get out. It’s your responsibility to keep him safely confined. It’s not his fault if he can get out. Are you not concerned that he might get run over?

I would not waste money on Don Sullivan and his silly secrets. Someone should tell him that bullying a dog is no secret.

Most dogs will obey a command once you teach them what the actual command is. If you don’t teach them they can’t obey something they don’t understand.
